I know that each time I eat canned foods my blood pressure shoots up, presumably due to the sodium and other salts. The same happens when I eat highly processed frozen foods such as frozen lasagna, surimi (fake crab or lobster made from fish), or other highly processed frozen foods. Again I presume it’s because of the sodium. But what about the simpler frozen foods? By this I mean the microwave-in-the-bag simpler foods like frozen whole grain wild and long grain rice with broccoli and carrots, or Asian mixtures with relatively low (1% – 5%) sodium per serving? They can be fixed and cleaned up easily by microwave cooking and then eating right out of the bag, and they break up the monotony of nothing but fresh fruits and veggies. I’m hoping you’re going to say they’re all right, but I don’t want to be fooling myself. Are they okay? They sure make a bachelor’s life easier!

@James Trice, Hey James! I am sure they make your life easier! When they claim low sodium they may contain higher amounts of potassium (which is used most often as a sodium substitute). Potassium is an electrolyte that can affect your heart as well. It affects the electrical impulses of your heart. Overall, in my own experiences and those of my patients, the packages with low sodium won’t make you feel as crummy, but should still be consumed moderately. Fresh is always best, but go ahead and make your life easier unless your doctor says otherwise! Thanks for the question James! Hope that helps!
