Diabetes is a disease where there is too much sugar in the blood stream.
It can be due to either the body not making enough insulin to deal with the blood sugar or the more common culprit where the body still makes insulin but the “gates” into the cells are impaired leading to increases in blood sugar levels. It affects about 23.6 million people in the United States.
The complications of diabetes include: neuropathy (nervous system disease), heart disease, amputations, blindness, kidney disease, high blood pressure, and stroke.
The vast majority of diabetes cases can be prevented! Isn’t that great news? They key to preventing diabetes or even reversing diabetes rests in diet and exercise! Just get moving and you can dramatically reduce your risk!
I have put together a list of 5 ways you can decrease your risk with what you eat.
- Magnesium is the top vitamin that has been linked to decreasing the risk of the devastating effects of diabetes. Check with your doctor or healthcare professional with the dosage that is recommended for you.
- Decrease your consumption of red meat and increase lean meats such as chicken. Red meat has many carcinogens and fats that can lead to cell impairment.
- Increase whole grains. By switching to whole wheat products instead of enriched wheat, you can help control spikes in blood sugar. Whole wheat products are released into your blood stream slower as sugar so your body can better handle it.
- Increase your consumption of antioxidants. Antioxidants are imperative for decreasing the affects of free radicals and other stressors on your system and cells. By increasing antioxidants, your body can better repair itself thus preventing disease.
- Drink tea such as black, green, and oolong. Tea has some properties similar to antioxidants and can dramatically reduce your risk of devastating disease.
With these 5 tips to preventing diabetes, make sure you don’t overload your system with tons of processed sugar and try to keep your blood sugar level even. Make sure you add physical activity daily in order to decrease your risk of developing diabetes.

Here is a little something you might want to pass on. Uncle Ben’s has small packets of rice that come in various flavors – you put them directly into the microwave and nuke them for 90 seconds and they are ready to – even right out of the bag. I used to get the one with white rice before you told me I should eat whole grains, so I switched from white rice to whole grain rice. But I didn’t read the label when I made the switch. Earlier I had read the white rice label and it said no sodium, so when I made the switch to the whole grain I presumed that it, too, would be very low sodium. WRONG. I noticed my blood pressure shot up that afternoon, and I checked everything but the rice looking for the cause and didn’t find it. But after seeing the BP shoot up after the rice a few more times I finally read the whole grain packet only to find that it was giving me 30% of my sodium per serving, and I had been eating two to four servings at a sitting! You may have known that what looks like two identical products can vary so much, but I had no idea, especially since they were made by the same manufacturer. If you have any other single males out there you might want to pass this on, because it’s not an understanding that comes naturally to us. Thanks again for the help. And have a great day. – James

@James Trice,
Awesome! Thanks James! It is definitely necessary to check the nutrition label on all packaged foods! You never know what they will throw in
