Hey there! Welcome to another friday which means I bring you my favorite healthy recipe of the week! This week I am bringing you my favorite Guacamole Recipe. I thought with the football playoffs starting (go Colts!), it was about time I bring you a bunch of my favorite dips that go great at parties!

I think this past week I have made my husband sick and tired of avocados because I have made guacamole so much! I just love it! For a healthy snack, cut up some fresh veggies and eat those with this dip! AMAZING!

Oh, yeah, and avocados may get a bad rep because they are higher in fat, but guess what? They are high in the healthy fats that we miss in our daily diets! You know those omega-3′s that are essential for ultimate health! Im not a huge fan of fish so this is one awesome, easy, and tasty way to get those essential fats!

So, in other words eat up! These are not going to make you fat! All that candy and sweets you eat will make you fat before a simple avocado will! You’ve gotta start thinking in terms of whats healthy and nutrient dense as opposed to just calories in! This is one food you would be wise to eat up and not skip out on! So start eating!

Yummy Raw Guacamole Dip

Ingredients:

2-3 avocados

1 medium tomato chopped

Juice from 1 lime

Optional ingredients, choose what combination sounds good:

1/4 tsp of garlic powder (1 clove garlic minced is even better!)

ground black pepper and celtic sea salt to taste

2 Tbsp of finely chopped onion

1/2 red pepper finely cut

1/2 green pepper finely cut

2 stalks celery finely chopped

Directions:

Scrape out insides of avocados and throw away skin and seed. Mash up both avocados. Add the chopped tomatoes and mix. Mix any combination of optional ingredients into the avocado and tomato mixture (can use all ingredients). Refrigerate for 10 minutes and then serve.

What do you think? Not that difficult to make it fresh! It is tastier than that packaged mix you buy in the grocery store and you get to skip all those preservatives and chemical additives that cause health issues!

Try it and let me know how it turns out! Don’t forget the cut up raw veggies to eat with it!

Leave me a comment below and let me know what you will be serving during the football playoffs!

What the heck does the TV show “What Not to Wear” have in common with Healthy Eating?

The Basic Synopsis about the TV “What Not to Wear” for those of you who have not seen it is that 2 stylists, Stacey and Clinton, find an unsuspecting person and make’s over their appearance from their clothes and makeup to their hair.

Check out this video to learn how this has to do with Healthy Eating!

Just like we take the time to look good on the outside, so many of us to pay attention to looking good on the inside and paying attention what we put into our bodies.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT!

Your body is made up of what you put in your mouth.

If you are like the majority of Americans,  your diet consists of packaged, processed foods, lots of refined grains, and tons of animal products.

When you are feeding your body food that is low in vital nutrients like in the American diet, how do you expect your body to look its best and function healthfully for a vibrant and disease-free you? Its time to make over your body and focus on giving it the most nutrient dense food so your body can look and feel its best!

The most nutrient dense foods are green leafy vegetables, other vegetables, beans, fruit, whole grains, and nuts and seeds.

And you guessed it! Animal products and processed foods are way below in the nutrients compared to those above!

So, now you know what to put in your mouth to make sure your body is healthy and full of energy! Imagine how vibrant you will look and feel!

Stop focusing just on appearances with your clothes, but also focus on how your body looks overall. Give it what it needs to be made over and look amazing!

I finally have put up the Ask Amber video for today (I will be doing these every tuesday, so if you have any healthy living questions leave me a comment below and maybe Ill answer your question next week!)

Today the 2 questions that I was asked are:

Is brown rice really that much healthier than white rice? Aren’t they both just rice?

-and-

What should you eat before a morning workout?

(Check out the answers in this latest Ask Amber video below!)

So, what do you think of these answers?

Have you thought of another question you have of healthy living? (Ask me by leaving a comment below)

Well, when it comes to whole grains vs. enriched grains, the answer is always that whole grains win out! They have all the fiber, minerals, and vitamins necessary for your ultimate health. Throw out those white grains which do nothing more for you than raise your blood sugar level leading your body to store more fat.

As far as what to eat before a morning workout session, remember to stick to carbs! Don’t forget that these should come from whole food sources, not that stupid enriched junk I just finished talking about! If you have any other ideas for morning snacks, leave me a comment below!

I have received a few questions on what is a raw food diet since this eating plan is becoming more and more popular among healthy living gurus.

Well, a raw food or living food diet is one that is based on whole, unprocessed, organic, uncooked fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and beans.

You may wonder if this would be a healthy diet since it has no dairy or meat. Well, I will explain that more in a future video, but rest assured, dairy and meat do not have to be a part of a healthy diet.

Actually there are hundreds of studies out there where animal products actually are the leading cause of diseases such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and some forms of cancer.

So why would these lead to disease if they were a necessary part of the diet? Well, they aren’t.

Anyways, in a raw or living foods diet, people east as close to nature as possible with fresh whole foods. They eat less processed foods. They also eat local and organic produce.

This way of eating is chocked full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants! No wonder people who follow this diet as opposed to the standard American diet have less disease prevalence, have more energy,
and just feel great!

If you are interested in a raw foods diet, I recommend a high raw diet in which about 75% of calories come from raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and beans, and about 20% come from these food groups cooked, and the remaining 5% is what you choose!

Leave me a comment below and let me know what you think of the raw food diet and if you have any further questions! Don’t forget to share this video with your friends and subscribe to my youtube channel!

What does a healthy lifestyle mean to you?

There are a few healthy lifestyle behaviors that we all think about when we think of living healthfully. However, do you sometimes find yourself relating to the quote above?

There are so many people who equate health behaviors with boredom.

I bet you can relate to some of these following statements:

  • Exercise is boring. I hate having to run in place on a treadmill for 20,30, or even up to 60 minutes in order to get my quota for enough exercise.
  • Working out is be healthy is hard work! It is too painful. There is no way I care this much about exercise to go through that four times a week or more!
  • Not another diet! I hate having to eat salads when my friends are all eating food like hamburgers, steak, ice cream, or soda.
  • Ah! I am so hungry! If I have to drink another one of those diet shakes instead of eating a full meal I am going to scream!

I am sure at one time of another, you would have found yourself relating to one or more of those statements.

This is why I love that quote I shared with you at the beginning of this post. Even though it was written somewhere between A.D. 38 and 103, it is still completely relevant today.

We are completely beating ourselves up today. We think in order to lose weight or get healthy; we must slave away in a gym and drink diet meal replacement shakes.

Hello! Time to wake up from that delusion!

Being healthy and losing weight is not a painful experience! A healthy lifestyle is something that you should be able to stick with and enjoy!

So, what are the 4 areas to focus on in an attempt to regain your health and be able to live healthy and thin for life?

  • Get moving! This does not have to mean going to the gym. If you enjoy the gym then by all means get moving! If could be as simple as taking your dog for a nice long walk in the evening! Hey, it would be great for the health of your dog as well. Think of your poor four-legged friend stuck at home all day waiting for you to get there! Whatever you decide to do, make sure you enjoy it or combine another activity to make it feel as though you aren’t painfully working out. Gardening, house cleaning, walking the mall while shopping, taking the stairs, and playing outside with you kids are all examples of activities that are not painful but will get you up and moving!
  • Eat a well-balanced diet. Did you know your food choices, if they aren’t healthy, contribute directly to obesity, heart disease, and diabetes? The key for being healthy is to increase fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains in your diet and decrease processed or packaged food as well as dairy and meat, despite what the government who get money from the dairy, agricultural, and meat industries tries to sell you on what’s healthy! Stick to fresh whole foods!
  • Control your weight. Did you know dieting for weight loss is the most unsuccessful intervention that is promoted to you as a healthy lifestyle choice to lose weight and prevent disease? So, how do you control your weight? When you make the switch to more activity and a better diet, your body will naturally find its ideal and (guess what?) thin body weight! So get moving and eating right so your body can do its job of getting you to a healthy weight.
  • Stress Management. Did you know that stress can lower your immune system, lead to cancer, ulcers, heart disease, and obesity? The best way to help your body manage stress is to (Yup! You guessed it!) get moving and eat a healthier diet!

So how are you going to take control of your health and make sure you give your body what it needs to reach its full potential?

Leave me a comment below and let me know! I would also love to hear any healthy living questions you may have that I can answer in a future “ask amber” video!

From the mailbag: What do you recommend for your clients wanting to lose weight?

Did you know that every Monday 10 million Americans go on a diet and the majority quit by Wednesday or Friday of that same week? Why can’t Americans stay on their diet? We have heard the statistics that over 60% of Americans are overweight and need to lose weight. So, why don’t diets work?

People get tired, irritable, hungry, frustrated, and just plain crazy!

How about this statistic: Americans are DRINKING up to half of their daily calories. This includes juice, coffee, soda, alcohol, energy drinks, etc.

What I recommend for my clients is to skip the dieting altogether!

WHAT?!?!?

You heard me right! Skip the diet! (Keep reading for an alternative)

There is no need for you to diet you just need to eat healthy. Most Americans think they eat healthy. However, most Americans eat the SAD, or standard American diet, which is absolutely pathetic! Not healthy! NOPE!

A healthy diet consists mainly of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains. This does not include processed foods and empty calories. White bread, white rice, and regular pasta are also off the healthy list.

These “not healthy” foods are foods that have been processed where there are pretty much no nutrients left in them! In white flour for instance, the nutrition has been stripped away so it can have a longer shelf life. Bugs and such won’t even go after it because there is no nutrition there! If bugs notice there are no nutrients, why do you still eat it? Alright, moving on…

You will probably give me all the excuses in the book of why you can’t eat healthy or why you need that coffee. I don’t want to hear it!

Or there is a weight loss shake that is actually healthy!

  • Suppress your appetite
  • Natural Energy
  • Feed your body with antioxidants to fight the free radicals that lead to cell damage and aging
  • Lower stress
  • Enhanced Mood
  • Ingredients to break down sugars before they are turned to fat, break down fats, and turn the fat into fuel to increase metabolism and calorie burn-off!
  • Helps you eat fewer calories!

There are not many products I do recommend. Many of you know how I feel about weight loss drinks, weight loss supplements, and energy drinks.

I don’t like them! They are evil!

Xowii Thin product line is the one weight loss drink and weight loss shake from a solid company that I actually can’t say anything bad about! I have some clients who have lost 10, 20, 50, and even 75 pounds using the products! The great thing is they are getting awesome nutrition and losing weight at the same time without giving up some of their favorite foods!

So, for those of you who asked about what I recommend for people to lose weight, I recommend:

Skipping the fad diets and instead researching proper nutrition; a great book is Eat to Live by Dr. Furhman. Eat healthy by increasing fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains and decreasing processed foods and decreasing animal products. When you are eating healthy, your body will find its naturally thin and healthy weight!

Or take the 12 day challenge with me so we can look great with the lights on!

As a part of this ongoing series regarding how to combat health and nutritional illiteracy in America, it is important to realize that the diet of 90% of Americans is based on junk! It’s true!

If you missed part 1 (Health Illiteracy in America) or part 2 (10 Ways to Start being Healthy), go back and check those out now before you take on this nutritional blog post!

With projections showing that 75% of the U.S. population will be overweight by 2020, it is time right now to take our health more seriously!

There is so much information out there about what is healthy and what we should be eating. The guidelines that are currently out there pretty much say, “eat more of everything”! Now how does that help our society when we are really suffering from eating too much?

These guidelines worked back in the 1930s when people really were not eating enough food. Now they say eat more meat, dairy, and grains because those are the industries that put their money into the government so the government will do pretty much under the radar advertising.

These guidelines do nothing for the current state of our country’s health.

What is really going on here in 2010 is that people are eating way more calories but these calories have zero nutritional value. Sure the advertisements out there all say ‘with iron’ or ‘calcium-fortified’.

All this means is that the companies add calcium into what otherwise is nutritionally junk food and this does not make this food suddenly healthy.

What we really need is truthful health and nutrition information so we can make healthier food choices without all the distractions that advertisers love!

So, today I am first going to cover what this junk diet mainly consists of and then go into what a healthy diet looks like.

Junk Diet

  • Lots of dead and processed foods
  • Not many fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Not much water
  • Lots of sugary drinks and soda beverages
  • Lots of processed sugar
  • Lots of processed carbohydrates
  • Lots of processed dairy
  • Lots of chemical food additives such as MSG and aspartame
  • Lots of BPA in plastics and epoxy resins that leads to hormonal imbalances etc.
  • Lots of pesticide-contaminated foods
  • Lots of unhealthy oils such as corn, soy, and partially hydrogenated oils
  • Lots of fried food or food cooked at high temperatures that decrease the nutritional value and increase the amount of carcinogens
  • Lots of animal products

So, does that list look familiar? How close are you to it?

Healthy Diet:

  • Lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds
  • Not many animal products or used more as a topping
  • Lots of variety of fresh, whole foods
  • Not much of processed sugars, flour, wheat
  • Not much of GMO or pesticide contaminated products
  • Not many processed foods with lots of chemical food additives
  • Lots and Lots of superfoods and food-based vitamins
  • How does that compare to what you’ve always been taught and what your current healthstyle is? I bet it is completely different, right? I know I had a mighty wakeup call when I first started researching nutrition.

What would this mean for your health?

It is all about taking on step at a time! What can you start doing today to help improve your health?

If you are at a loss, how about starting with adding a LIQUID multivitamin to your daily routine? I emphasis liquid vitamin because it is closer to eating whole foods the way your body can easily absorb its nutrients.

A pill has tons of fillers and additives. With a pill, you can’t get all the nutrients absorbed by your body because of the inability of your body to completely absorb the pill.

I recommend Xowii Ultimate Liquid Vitamin due to the lack of all the fillers or additives and due to all the testimonials of how much better people feel after just 1 week! Take the 1 week challenge here!

Take inventory of your current diet. Are you promoting health or disease?

Take advantage while you are in the mindset to eat better and get access to my FREE Healthy Food Guide crash course as a thank you for being a part of my blog community. This will give you the basics of healthy eating so you can finally regain your health.

Every Tuesday night the past few weeks I have been hanging out with other wives who have husbands that are also going to school to be pastors. It has truly been a great experience to get to meet some awesome women.

One of the classes I am currently taking is a cooking class (if you haven’t read my ‘about me” page and don’t know I HATE cooking, check it out now!). Now, this cooking class is totally opposite the healthstyle I have been working on but it is still fun!

Anyways, the other day I was asked, “Amber, how do you stay so skinny?”

I answered, “I don’t eat”.

Seriously, though, that is such a common question I have been asked throughout my life. I have been naturally thin all my life and don’t know anything else. I bet I would be a millionaire if I was paid for each time I got asked that question over the years. Sure, I gained the dreaded freshmen 15 when I went to college, but overall, I have been tall and skinny.

This question that was asked by a well-meaning woman has stuck with me over the past few days. It is a question that so many people struggle with wondering, ‘why is she/he so skinny? I eat less than them!’

Now, without having to go into the fact that some people are built differently, I want you to know something: You can reach that ultimate body you are dreaming about without sacrificing everything you love!

Think about that for a moment. You can reach that ultimate body you are dreaming about without sacrificing everything you love!

The #1 Secret I have come up with that has allowed people the greatest weight loss and ability to keep the weight off over the years is increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables.

Eat more plant based foods.

See, it is not some complex diet or grueling workout plan. It’s something as easy as eating more fruits and vegetables.

Fruits and vegetables have tons of vitamins, nutrients, water, and fiber that give your body what it needs to feel full and satisfied. You’d be surprised that when you give your body what it needs as far as nutrients go, you will dramatically lower your cravings.

The high water and fiber content allow your body to feel full and it slows the digestion of the food which keeps you feeling full longer.

When you don’t eat the fruits and vegetables, what are you eating in its place? We tend to eat lots of white flour products, white rice, white bread, chips, cookies, etc. These processed foods are void of all nutrients that are necessary for you to make your body feel full and without cravings.

Did you know your body doesn’t really distinguish between enriched grains and sugar? When you eat these products (even though you think you are eating healthy), your blood sugar spikes which causes your body to release more insulin.

When you have lots of insulin in your blood stream, your body wants to store more sugar as fat. That is really what causes weight gain; more than eating high fat products.

Anyways, the skinny girl secret today for staying thin is to eat more fruits and vegetables and less processed food!

Oh and raw fruits and vegetables maintain more nutrients in them than cooked. Just a word of thought!

You think you can handle that?

Here are some ideas for eating more fruits and vegetables today:

Make a smoothie

Juice the produce in your fridge

Make a fruit and veggie salad

Can you add any ideas to this list? Leave me a comment below and let me know if you have any ideas or comments about my answer for staying skinny. Don’t forget to share the love by sharing this with your friends by clicking the social media icons below!

What do you think of when you think of changing your life by finally taking control of your health?

For many people, getting healthy seems hard. They think of gross, tasteless health food. They think of not being able to eat some of their favorite foods. They can also see it as a chore,  a struggle, or a hassle.

What would it take to start your road for healthier eating? What if I told you that you can be healthy without giving up everything you love? Would you be interested?

The feedback that I am getting from many of my readers is that you just don’t know where to begin. There is so much information out there, it is just so dang overwhelming.

I came up with 7 strategies to help jumpstart your road to healthier eating. These are the same steps I took during my personal transition to a lifestyle of health or what I like to call my healthstyle!

Everything always starts with mindset!

This applies to all areas of your life such as with business, friendships, work, personal development, and of course health! In order to get started effectively with healthier eating, it is imperative that you have a positive mindset.

You can be healthy! Thank about how great you will feel when you are filling your body with all the nutrients it needs! Imagine, all the energy you will have, not to mention being able to sleep better at night.

What is motivating you to eat healthier? If you believe you can be successful, you can achieve that success!

The key to any lifestyle change is to start small.

Think about a time in your life where you wanted to achieve something big, but got so overwhelmed that it all fell apart. Why do you think you failed?

Now, what if you wanted to achieve something, but instead of reaching for the ultimate goal, you decided to break it into small steps or changes? You would be more likely to be successful. The same goes for healthier eating. If you try to give up everything unhealthy that you absolutely love to eat, you are not going to stay motivated.

The key is to start with small goals and the motivation that comes with each small goal reached will keep you marching on and eventually leading you to the ultimate goal you set for yourself. It all starts small!

Plan a week’s worth of meals by putting together a menu.

How many times have you come home from a long day at work and had no clue what to make for dinner? That happened to me A LOT.

Before I began planning weekly menus, eating out was a regular occurrence. This is not healthy by any means (don’t give me the excuse that you went to a healthy fast food place like Subway because that doesn’t cut it!).

The key here is to plan ahead of time so you know exactly what to make and will be healthier because of it! Have fun and see what creative meals you can come up with!

Once you have your menu figured out for the week, make a shopping list!

The key here is to stick to it! This means no slipping in that chocolate bar just because you went down that aisle!

Creating a shopping list can also help you save money! Look for coupons for items on your list. A great way to do this is to go to the websites of the brands you usually purchase. Many of these websites have coupons you can print off. Double your savings for your healthy food by finding a corresponding coupon from the store!

Get healthy and save money by planning a week of meals, building a shopping list, and finding coupons!

Eat what you love!

Stick to healthier choices of food you love and don’t completely give up your favorites like pizza and ice cream right away! Maybe cut down these foods you love that are not healthy to one day a week only!

A boring or tasteless meal is not going to inspire you to continue on your journey to healthy eating! Plan your healthy eating menus so that you can enjoy your food and stay inspired.

Making healthy eating a mainstay of your lifestyle, you must make sure to have fun, party, and get creative!

When you are having fun, flexing your creative ability, throwing some parties, your motivation and inspiration level for sticking with your healthier eating plan will be 10x higher than making health food boring.

One lapse is not a relapse.

Okay, so your had a bad week. Get your butt back in gear and get next week’s menu planned and ready to go! Just because you did a bad week. This does not mean your healthy eating plan drop-out!

Your road to ultimate health may be a bumpy ride. However, you have the skills to keep picking yourself back up and get moving forward! Never QUIT!

Hope these 7 strategies help you on your road to healthier eating habits. These strategies may be cyclical and you may find yourself going back and starting over. It’s all a journey. As you keep moving you are getting closer to your ultimate goal. Pretty soon some habits will be formed and you may find yourself doing things you don’t think possible!

Leave me a comment below and let me know what you think of these 7 strategies? Do you have any other ideas you have found valuable that you can share with others who are currently struggling with improving their eating habits?

Don’t forget to share the love by sharing this with your friends by clicking the social media links below!
