With the health of the U.S. spiraling way out of control, how can we sit back and not try to regain our overall wellness? There are many different facets that affect our overall wellness which is why I have put together a list of the 10 tenets of ultimate health for this blog post.

With projections showing that 75% of the U.S. population will be overweight by 2020, it is time right now to take our health more seriously! Maintaining optimal health is not difficult to obtain when you are educated on what it takes to be healthy. Healthy does not mean giving up everything you love to eat and running 15K every day.

In part 1 from earlier this week, I covered the overview of the health outlook of the U.S. and what the causes are for this surge in the overweight population and what we can do to stop it and protect our own health. If you missed part 1, you’ll want to go back and read up this growing problem among us!  Visit part 1 here!

So, for part 2 of this 4 part series, I am going to share with you 10 simple strategies that will help improve not only your physical health, but also your emotional and psychological health. Imagine what your life will look like when you are radiating health in all areas of your life?

Eat mostly plants.

By eating mostly plants, you will be getting the wide variety of foods that are necessary for ultimate health. How much of raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds are you currently getting? Is your current diet providing the necessary nutrients? Hint: if your diet has a lot of “popular” or fast food in it you aren’t getting the nutrients that are vital for optimal health.

Eat less meat, dairy, and animal products.

There has been study after study that show that those who eat less meat and dairy products are healthier and have fewer incidents of certain cancers, diabetes, obesity, and most of all heart disease. Try switching to the mindset that meat and dairy products should be used like a topping instead of the main course. Your body will thank you!

Eat less processed foods including white flour, bread, etc.

First, processed foods are just a bunch of chemicals thrown together to look like food. It doesn’t have the vital nutrients you need to thrive. Don’t pay attention to marketing; they are just trying to get you to buy their food. Real food doesn’t need advertising.

White flour and bread act like sugar in your body by causing a spike in your blood sugar, a spike in insulin which leads to your body storing the extra sugar as fat. That is the secret behind weight gain. Choose 100% whole grains and you won’t get fat like you would with white junk.

Get social.

It’s important for your psychological and emotional health to get social. Hang out with friends. Laugh. Have fun. By doing this more you will be overall healthier and ready to take on what life throws your way.

Work on taking up some hobbies.

It’s important to find a hobby or something that you really enjoy and do it! Our minds love to enjoy things! What do you enjoy doing? How does doing this make you feel? This is a huge way to combat the stresses of life and you have fun doing something you love.

Get moving.

We all know physical activity is important for our overall health, but how many of us truly try to get moving as much as possible. For many of us the gym is intimidating. Physical activity is not limited to the gym. It means going for that walk with your family. Walk the dog. Take the stairs. Park at the end of the parking lot or get up and walk around your office building every hour in order to get moving. Your body will feel so good just by getting moving! Our bodies are not meant to be couch potatoes!

Spend some time on yourself and de-stress!

We all have so much stress in our lives. We also spend most of the time we do have on doing stuff for our families like making dinner, playing chauffer, going to sporting events. What we fail to do is to take a little time each day for ourselves.

You are not superman/superwoman! You can’t go doing everything for everyone else and neglecting yourself. Believe me; if you spend a little time on yourself, you will be in a better state to better take care of your family and others. When you are not emotionally satisfied by taking care of yourself, you will not be able to adequately take care of your family.

Volunteer.

On the other side of things, it feels great to help out others. It’s a great way to relieve stress and improve your psychological health. When you are able to volunteer and serve others, you might be surprised with how much you learn about others and yourself. It’s a great way to get that emotional uplifting! Try it!

Make sure to go outside every day.

Now I understand that this is not possible in lots of places in January. However, it’s important for your psychological and even physical self to get that exposure to nature on some level each day. Nature offers a great stress relief and rejuvenation that provides a great boost and motivator to complete and be successful in other areas of your life. Relax and enjoy nature in some way! Hint: in winter, buy a bouquet of flowers from the grocery store and put it on the table and take time to smell the flowers! It feels great doesn’t it?

Detoxify your life.

There is so much going on in our lives and hitting us from all directions such as the pollutants in the environment, toxic chemicals in our cleaning products and our food, and the overall emotional stresses in our lives. How are we supposed to combat it all? Detoxify your life. Research how to detoxify yourself. Whether you decide to detoxify through your diet or by taking more time to emotionally recharge yourself from the toxicity in your life pulling you down, it’s important to detoxify.

By focusing on improving your health in all the different areas of your life, you will feel more empowered and inspired. Imagine how your life will look when you have your health under control and can focus on achieving all those awesome goals you have for yourself. A new study has been published by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development that paints a grave picture for the direction the health of the U.S. population is headed. It says that 75%, 3 out of 4, adults will be overweight or obese by 2010. That is ridiculous! This study further illustrates where that puts us in the world: #1! NUMBER 1!

How should we feel about that?

Did you know that the wellness industry is a trillion dollar industry?

Now what do you think of the results of this study? Pretty darn crazy for how much we spend on wellness if you ask me!

The Real Issue of Our Health
The Institute of Medicine completed a study that showed health illiteracy as a top issue that needs to be addressed in order to control healthcare costs. Even back in 1996, health illiteracy cost the U.S. $29 billion in additional medical costs. Imagine what that means now that the obesity epidemic spins out of control!

Due to health illiteracy, there are many diseases that are running rampant in the U.S. such as obesity, heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes.

According to an Oxford University study, by 2050, stroke cases will rise by 23%, heart disease by 44%, high blood pressure by 34%, and diabetes by 98% and these are all related to obesity.

What this all boils down to is the fact that more adults are overweight than those that are normal weight. This stems mainly from lifestyle behaviors and nutritional illiteracy.

What do you mean the public is nutritionally illiterate?
Most people do not know:

  • Soda is bad for you
  • Milk leads to acne, obesity, and heart disease
  • Store-bought cookies lead to obesity and diabetes
  • Hydrogenated oils lead to heart disease
  • Sodium nitrate (found in processed meats) lead to aggressive cancers of the brain, pancreas, and liver
  • Difference between organic and natural foods
  • Difference between living and dead foods

What is causing Americans to be so nutritionally illiterate?

The truth of the matter is that nutrition just isn’t taught much. Doctor’s only get 1 hr on average in all their medical training on nutrition. The health information that is taught in schools does not cover the specifics of what to avoid and only talks about what is politically correct. Only the USDA food pyramid is taught in schools is another advertising mechanism by dairy, grain, and meat industries in order to help their bottom line. Did you know there are USDA employees that have revealed the USDA food pyramid reflects the pressures from politics rather than sound medical advice? It’s true!

It appears that most nutrition illiteracy stems from business and politics.

  • Medical schools get much of their funding from pharmaceutical companies. Why would we think they would teach our wonderful medical doctors anything outside of drugs and surgery which happen to make the pharmaceutical companies their money? Listen folks, nutrition and health just are not profitable so why would they be interested?
  • The FDA also gets money from the pharmaceutical companies when the pharmaceutical companies have a new drug they want the FDA to approve. You think an organization who gets funding from pharmaceutical companies is going to say anything that would affect their bottom line even for the sake of health?
  • The food industry is a very profitable industry and because it is big business it has its foot in politics. The government is not going to do anything about where they get money!

Do you think the government will do anything for the sake of the health of all American’s that would upset these big industries? I would hope so, but the sad reality is probably not. They will not do anything that will affect their bottom line.

FACT: Teaching the public the truth about health and nutrition does not make money.

  • No one is going to tell you that simple lifestyle changes such as a healthier diet and more physical activity trumps prescription drugs by huge margins since this would mean no money for the FDA or drug companies.
  • No one is going to tell you not to eat high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, sodium nitrate, monosodium glutamate, or aspartame because it would mean huge losses for the food industry which has their boot in politics.
  • Bottom line: no one is going to tell you how to BE TRULY healthy with proper nutrition because nutrition does not make money and would only lead to a huge loss of money for the government, FDA, pharmaceutical companies, and the food industry.

What can you do to make sure your family gets the truth?

  • Do your own research. Don’t listen to the media, advertisers, or your pesky neighbor across the street. Look things up for yourself.
  • Right off the bat you know junk food is horrible for you. Don’t eat it.
  • If something is advertised for, don’t buy it. Healthy food comes from farmers who don’t have the money to advertise.

This past week a new study emerged claiming that eating berries such as blueberries, strawberries, and acai berries will help your brain age in a healthy way. In this study, researchers report that the berries may be responsible for cleaning up the toxic debris that leads to mental decline and other age-related memory loss.

This report states:

Poulose and Joseph focused on another reason why nerve function declines with aging. It involves a reduction in the brain’s natural house-cleaning process. Cells called microglia are the housekeepers. In a process called autophagy, they remove and recycle biochemical debris that otherwise would interfere with brain function.

“But in aging, microglia fail to do their work, and debris builds up,” Poulose explained. “In addition, the microglia become over-activated and actually begin to damage healthy cells in the brain. Our research suggests that the polyphenolics in berries have a rescuing effect. They seem to restore the normal housekeeping function. These findings are the first to show these effects of berries.”

This is awesome research for your health. Age-related mental decline is not something you just have to live with!

Mental decline as part of the aging process may be due to your brain not being able to detoxify itself from the debris that accumulates.

This is important for the medical community because it shows that your diet can actually impair your body leading to disease.

Berries help the brain’s housekeepers keep up the good work! They also protect you against age-related memory loss!

So what does this mean?

Well, eat your berries! But that’s not all! Increase your consumption of a full array of fruits and vegetables which also contain many different healthful chemicals for your brain and your body. Choose fruits and vegetables that are full of anthocyanins which are found in the produce with the colors of blue, dark red, and orange.

Be eating a healthful diet full of fruits and vegetables that cover the expanse of the rainbow, you will make sure you are getting all the nutrients and antioxidants possible that will help protect your body from inflammation.

Without giving your body the nutrients it needs to fight off the damaging affects of the world around us, you are setting yourself up for development of chronic diseases!

So, get out there and eat your fruits and vegetables! Fresh is best, but frozen is a great runner up of providing the most healthful chemicals and nutrients for your body!

A great way to get your big dose of berries and some other great health superfoods is by making this awesome All-Year  Berry Smoothie!

A new study released by Kaiser Permanente sought to determine the prevalence of extreme obesity among our children. This is the first study that has looked at the issues among extreme obese children.

The study had a sample of kids between the ages of 2 and 19 years of age. The results of this study showed that 7.3% of boys and 5.5% of girls are categorized as extremely obese. This percentage was higher among the Hispanic and African American population and slightly lower among the Asian-Pacific and White Americans.

To put this into perspective, the population of children in 2006 in the United States was 73 million kids so,  5.1 million children in the US are extremely obese.

This means that 5.1 million children are set up to have huge health issues and a shorter lifespan compared to their healthy counterparts. This study showed that children that are extremely obese have a 10 to 20 year decrease for their life expectancy!

It also showed that there is a great increase in health issues that used to be seen only in the 50s or 60s that are now present in 20 year olds. These health issues include heart disease, type 2 diabetes, a join issues to name a few.

We are setting our kids up for failure! Health initiatives need to be taken in order to give these kids a chance! They are young and have their whole lives ahead of them. By allowing them to partake in unhealthy behaviors, we as adults are failing them! We are shortening their lives and decreasing their overall quality of life. They are becoming sicker and are not able to experience everything like other children.

So what should we do as adults and parents to help our children out? We need to set an example with our own health. We should replace unhealthy eating habits with lots of nutritious alternatives that will give them the vital nutrients that will help prevent disease and extend their lives.

We also need to promote physical activity whether it’s encouraging playing on the playground, playing sports, or just playing outside. It is vital we teach them on healthy eating and activity habits to give them the best chance for the life they deserve.

Now, it’s not just the extremely obese children that have issues. The percentage of children who are merely overweight is increasing dramatically. Even if you think your kids are just a little chubby and it’s cute, make sure you have their best interest at heart. Teach them the healthy habits. Give your kids the life they deserve! This research study also showed that 37% of children are overweight, 20% are obese, and 6% overall are extremely obese. Just 10 years ago, the percentage of obese children was less than 5%! What are we doing to our kids?

Get in gear parents and other adults and help our children regain their health and prevent disease in order that they may grow up and reach their full potential. It’s up to you! Help our kids!
