I always used to laugh at those people who would talk about doing a journal. What could you possibly have to write about?

Then I learned about health journaling and was hooked.

It is an awesome tool to track your progress and really figure out how you are doing on your road to ultimate health.

Some things that are great to include would be a food log of what, when, how you feel when you eat. Also, how is your energy level? In addition, include what you did as far as activities or workouts.

Never degrade yourself if you don’t follow your healthy living plan. Just get right back in the game and start from there!

Health journaling is a great way to express what you are doing, specific solutions to your health issues, and to evaluate your progress.

What do you think about a health journal? How do you recommend keeping track of your progress? Leave me a comment below and let me know!

One of the biggest struggles in our current lifestyle is that of living a healthy lifestyle. It seems like it is very challenging and a painful experience.

I mean who wants to workout like crazy or go on a strict diet where they have to suffer through watching their friends eat all the good stuff? Not many.

A lot of people think they just don’t have the time to be healthy. Well, this is what I say to them:

If it is important to you, you’ll fit it into your schedule and you will be motivated to get it done.

It’s a fact that what people find as most important to them magically fit into their already full schedules all of a sudden!

So, in order to be healthy, make healthy living a priority for your family.

In order to get started, listen to your body. What is currently going on and what aches and pains do you wish would go away?

Take a health inventory by writing down how your body feels before and after you eat certain things and different activities you participate in.

Do you suffer from headaches, backaches, stomach aches after you eat, etc?

Write it all down.

Now look back over your list and what do you see?

Its time to make health a priority so you are feeling awesome again! If you have struggled in the past to figure out where to start or how to stay motivated or if you are just needed some support, I encourage you to visit my blog and schedule your free consultation with me!

We all want to get the most out of our workouts. If we are going to put forth the effort, we want to reap the benefits, right?

Here are a few quick tips to help you keep burning fat and lose more weight even after you are done with your workout for the day:

  • The best time to workout is morning before you eat breakfast. By waiting until after breakfast, your body will be ready to burn more calories and you will most likely make healthier decisions after you have all those endorphins running through your body!
  • By incorporating more strength training into your workout, you will burn more calories. The more muscle your body has, the faster your metabolism.
  • Try out interval training. Recent studies that were done showed that those who engaged in interval training instead of just long distance running burned more fat.

By working out in the morning with these 3 tips in mind, you will feel supercharged for the rest of the day which will lead to healthier food choices, you eating less calories, and you losing more weight in the long run and being able to keep it off.

If you have any other tips of your own or have a question for me, leave a comment below and let me know!

Did you know that up to 35% of Americans start a new diet on Monday and the majority of them quit by Wednesday?

Why are all these people failing on their goals to lose weight?

What have you tried in your quest to lose weight? Has it worked? If not, why do you keep doing it?

The key to successful weight loss is all about making healthy choices in your entire life, not just for a few weeks every few months.

Here are some of the top tips for helping you finally reach success with your weight loss attempts:

  • Take 100% responsibility for your health. You are the only one who can change your current health status. Its time to take complete control and stop blaming others.
  • Hate to break it to you, but exercise is necessary for any healthy living plan. There is no way around it. However, it doesn’t have to be a painful experience or boring. There are plenty of different
activities that help get your body moving.
  • Keep track of what you eat, your exercise, and your weight. This way you know where you stand and what progress you have made.
  • Throw out everything you know about going on a diet. Its time to go on the healthy eating diet where you focus the majority of your meals on fresh foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, etc

Forget those commercial weight loss programs, surgery solutions, or weight loss supplements. They are not what you need to have lasting results.

Health is all a lifelong journey. There are no quick fixes.

Its time to get the support you need to be successful, learn how a health coach can take you from suffering with yo-yo dieting to having lifelong success with keeping the weight off.

I have received quite a few questions asking what the first and most important step in getting started with losing weight is.

It seems like people are just plain struggling to get started with the right foot that will allow them to have the most success when it comes to losing weight and keeping it off.

I made a quick video to illustrate the importance and power of losing weight with positive thinking. Watch my video below:

I was shocked when I saw that we have 60,000 thoughts a day! I had never really thought about it before.

It was then that I realized just how important it is that we control our thoughts and use them to help us accomplish things in life.

Jack Canfield, Anthony Robbins, and other top personal development gurus also talk about how important it is that you have a positive mindset before you start trying to get somewhere in life!

Your thoughts are the #1 key for ultimate weight loss. Any negative thoughts will ruin any weight loss plan before you even start. So, use your positive thoughs to plan, set goals, and get it done!

What are your thoughts about using your positive thoughts and throwing out those self-defeating thoughts that are hindering your success? Leave me a comment below and let me know!

Otherwise, leave me a comment below and answer the question of the day: What is your favorite activity to do that gets you up and moving?

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”
~ Robert Frost

I love that quote from Robert Frost. Doesn’t that entire poem paint an amazing mental picture and make you really feel you are in the woods having to make the choice?

What the heck does a great poem from American Literature have to do with a blog about healthy living?

Hold your horses! I’ll get there! I wanted to let you in on what that poem means to me and why it has made such a big impact on my life despite me recently graduating from school and entering the “real world”. So, watch the video below and then keep reading because this can have a huge impact on your health and your life.

As many of you know, I am a Registered Nurse. During nursing school, I got introduced to a big natural health news website (naturalnews.com -check it out!) by my mother who is also a Registered Nurse who is focused in on health promotion (not to the extent, dedication, and research amount that I am…don’t tell her I said that!).

Anyways, this site opened my eyes to what is really going on in the health world and what it really means to have a healthy lifestyle. This more and more I learned about natural health and the more and more I learned about the traditional medical system way in nursing school, the more and more I researched independently to find the truth.

I was amazed with what the research literature spelled out over and over in thousands of studies: the body has an innate healing capacityif you just give it the nutrients it needs and take care of it. Why wasn’t this taught in nursing school?

In nursing school, I was taught how to critically think and to practice “evidence-based medicine”, but in reality we were learning the information that drug companies, the FDA, USDA, and government wanted us to know about health.

I am not saying that we didn’t learn all the scientific based medicine, but it wasn’t the complete story. There wasn’t any focus on overall healthy living and the ability the body has to stay healthy when fed the right nutrients.

My fork in the road came when I chose to stop putting the junk in my body and leading a sedentary lifestyle and choose to get moving and eat a healthy diet focused on food such as fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and legumes.

My next fork in the road came when I was working the hospital and we were supposed to be making sick people well. However, the patients would just keep coming back. I didn’t feel I was making a difference and got burnt out real quick.

That’s when I had a choice to make: keep doing what was expected with me as a nurse or do what would give people the knowledge and support so they can actually get healthy and enjoy life!

I can tell you some people were not happy at my choice of leaving, I guess what could be considered the “corporate nursing world” and starting as a Certified RN Health Coach (a new emerging field) in order to give people unbiased health knowledge and support for their ultimate health success.

I came to two roads diverged in the woods, and I took the one less traveled by with my career choice and health behaviors and that has made a profound difference in my life!

I am here to help you regain your health.

What two roads have you come to?

  • 60% of Americans are overweight.
  • 20% of Americans are completely sedentary.
  • 5% of Americans get regular exercise.
  • 95% of Americans eat the S.A.D. (standard American diet)
  • 90% think they eat a healthy diet.

All this has led to an increase in heart disease, obesity, diabetes, cancer, and digestive issues, etc.

Where do you fit in these statistics?

You are at a crossroads. What are you going to do about your health? The current healthy living recommendations by the government have only led to an increase in the poor health of Americans! I mean just look at the statistics above! We’ve got to do something about that!

Have you ever heard the definition of insanity? It is doing the same thing over and over and over again expecting different results. We need to get out of this insanity and start doing something different otherwise these statistics are only going to bet worse!

Take the road less traveled because it will make all the difference in the world!

If you have any health questions, feel free to leave me a comment below and let me know so I can answer it in a future “ask amber” video!

If you are ready to get out of the insanity that is currently your health status, but feel like you need a little support, check into getting a personal health coach. I offer free consultations.

“Why do strong arms fatigue themselves with frivolous dumbbells? To dig a vineyard is worthier exercise for men.” Marcus Valerius Martiallis

What does a healthy lifestyle mean to you?

There are a few healthy lifestyle behaviors that we all think about when we think of living healthfully. However, do you sometimes find yourself relating to the quote above?

There are so many people who equate health behaviors with boredom.

I bet you can relate to some of these following statements:

  • Exercise is boring. I hate having to run in place on a treadmill for 20,30, or even up to 60 minutes in order to get my quota for enough exercise.
  • Working out is be healthy is hard work! It is too painful. There is no way I care this much about exercise to go through that four times a week or more!
  • Not another diet! I hate having to eat salads when my friends are all eating food like hamburgers, steak, ice cream, or soda.
  • Ah! I am so hungry! If I have to drink another one of those diet shakes instead of eating a full meal I am going to scream!

I am sure at one time of another, you would have found yourself relating to one or more of those statements.

This is why I love that quote I shared with you at the beginning of this post. Even though it was written somewhere between A.D. 38 and 103, it is still completely relevant today.

We are completely beating ourselves up today. We think in order to lose weight or get healthy; we must slave away in a gym and drink diet meal replacement shakes.

Hello! Time to wake up from that delusion!

Being healthy and losing weight is not a painful experience! A healthy lifestyle is something that you should be able to stick with and enjoy!

So, what are the 4 areas to focus on in an attempt to regain your health and be able to live healthy and thin for life?

  • Get moving! This does not have to mean going to the gym. If you enjoy the gym then by all means get moving! If could be as simple as taking your dog for a nice long walk in the evening! Hey, it would be great for the health of your dog as well. Think of your poor four-legged friend stuck at home all day waiting for you to get there! Whatever you decide to do, make sure you enjoy it or combine another activity to make it feel as though you aren’t painfully working out. Gardening, house cleaning, walking the mall while shopping, taking the stairs, and playing outside with you kids are all examples of activities that are not painful but will get you up and moving!
  • Eat a well-balanced diet. Did you know your food choices, if they aren’t healthy, contribute directly to obesity, heart disease, and diabetes? The key for being healthy is to increase fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains in your diet and decrease processed or packaged food as well as dairy and meat, despite what the government who get money from the dairy, agricultural, and meat industries tries to sell you on what’s healthy! Stick to fresh whole foods!
  • Control your weight. Did you know dieting for weight loss is the most unsuccessful intervention that is promoted to you as a healthy lifestyle choice to lose weight and prevent disease? So, how do you control your weight? When you make the switch to more activity and a better diet, your body will naturally find its ideal and (guess what?) thin body weight! So get moving and eating right so your body can do its job of getting you to a healthy weight.
  • Stress Management. Did you know that stress can lower your immune system, lead to cancer, ulcers, heart disease, and obesity? The best way to help your body manage stress is to (Yup! You guessed it!) get moving and eat a healthier diet!

So how are you going to take control of your health and make sure you give your body what it needs to reach its full potential?

Leave me a comment below and let me know! I would also love to hear any healthy living questions you may have that I can answer in a future “ask amber” video!

From the mailbag: What do you recommend for your clients wanting to lose weight?

Did you know that every Monday 10 million Americans go on a diet and the majority quit by Wednesday or Friday of that same week? Why can’t Americans stay on their diet? We have heard the statistics that over 60% of Americans are overweight and need to lose weight. So, why don’t diets work?

People get tired, irritable, hungry, frustrated, and just plain crazy!

How about this statistic: Americans are DRINKING up to half of their daily calories. This includes juice, coffee, soda, alcohol, energy drinks, etc.

What I recommend for my clients is to skip the dieting altogether!

WHAT?!?!?

You heard me right! Skip the diet! (Keep reading for an alternative)

There is no need for you to diet you just need to eat healthy. Most Americans think they eat healthy. However, most Americans eat the SAD, or standard American diet, which is absolutely pathetic! Not healthy! NOPE!

A healthy diet consists mainly of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains. This does not include processed foods and empty calories. White bread, white rice, and regular pasta are also off the healthy list.

These “not healthy” foods are foods that have been processed where there are pretty much no nutrients left in them! In white flour for instance, the nutrition has been stripped away so it can have a longer shelf life. Bugs and such won’t even go after it because there is no nutrition there! If bugs notice there are no nutrients, why do you still eat it? Alright, moving on…

You will probably give me all the excuses in the book of why you can’t eat healthy or why you need that coffee. I don’t want to hear it!

Or there is a weight loss shake that is actually healthy!

  • Suppress your appetite
  • Natural Energy
  • Feed your body with antioxidants to fight the free radicals that lead to cell damage and aging
  • Lower stress
  • Enhanced Mood
  • Ingredients to break down sugars before they are turned to fat, break down fats, and turn the fat into fuel to increase metabolism and calorie burn-off!
  • Helps you eat fewer calories!

There are not many products I do recommend. Many of you know how I feel about weight loss drinks, weight loss supplements, and energy drinks.

I don’t like them! They are evil!

Xowii Thin product line is the one weight loss drink and weight loss shake from a solid company that I actually can’t say anything bad about! I have some clients who have lost 10, 20, 50, and even 75 pounds using the products! The great thing is they are getting awesome nutrition and losing weight at the same time without giving up some of their favorite foods!

So, for those of you who asked about what I recommend for people to lose weight, I recommend:

Skipping the fad diets and instead researching proper nutrition; a great book is Eat to Live by Dr. Furhman. Eat healthy by increasing fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains and decreasing processed foods and decreasing animal products. When you are eating healthy, your body will find its naturally thin and healthy weight!

Or take the 12 day challenge with me so we can look great with the lights on!

I bet if you are anything like me, you prefer to spend your time around others when the lights are dimmed! We look better! Why would you want people to see your imperfections?

I know you would rather be  out in the lights and still show off your great looking self! This is why I have a 12 day weight loss challenge! Look, you don’t have to deprive yourself of all the great holiday food but you can still lose weight! How could you pass that up? It doesn’t hardly cost anything I promise! With the health of the U.S. spiraling way out of control, how can we sit back and not try to regain our overall wellness? There are many different facets that affect our overall wellness which is why I have put together a list of the 10 tenets of ultimate health for this blog post.

With projections showing that 75% of the U.S. population will be overweight by 2020, it is time right now to take our health more seriously! Maintaining optimal health is not difficult to obtain when you are educated on what it takes to be healthy. Healthy does not mean giving up everything you love to eat and running 15K every day.

In part 1 from earlier this week, I covered the overview of the health outlook of the U.S. and what the causes are for this surge in the overweight population and what we can do to stop it and protect our own health. If you missed part 1, you’ll want to go back and read up this growing problem among us!  Visit part 1 here!

So, for part 2 of this 4 part series, I am going to share with you 10 simple strategies that will help improve not only your physical health, but also your emotional and psychological health. Imagine what your life will look like when you are radiating health in all areas of your life?

Eat mostly plants.

By eating mostly plants, you will be getting the wide variety of foods that are necessary for ultimate health. How much of raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds are you currently getting? Is your current diet providing the necessary nutrients? Hint: if your diet has a lot of “popular” or fast food in it you aren’t getting the nutrients that are vital for optimal health.

Eat less meat, dairy, and animal products.

There has been study after study that show that those who eat less meat and dairy products are healthier and have fewer incidents of certain cancers, diabetes, obesity, and most of all heart disease. Try switching to the mindset that meat and dairy products should be used like a topping instead of the main course. Your body will thank you!

Eat less processed foods including white flour, bread, etc.

First, processed foods are just a bunch of chemicals thrown together to look like food. It doesn’t have the vital nutrients you need to thrive. Don’t pay attention to marketing; they are just trying to get you to buy their food. Real food doesn’t need advertising.

White flour and bread act like sugar in your body by causing a spike in your blood sugar, a spike in insulin which leads to your body storing the extra sugar as fat. That is the secret behind weight gain. Choose 100% whole grains and you won’t get fat like you would with white junk.

Get social.

It’s important for your psychological and emotional health to get social. Hang out with friends. Laugh. Have fun. By doing this more you will be overall healthier and ready to take on what life throws your way.

Work on taking up some hobbies.

It’s important to find a hobby or something that you really enjoy and do it! Our minds love to enjoy things! What do you enjoy doing? How does doing this make you feel? This is a huge way to combat the stresses of life and you have fun doing something you love.

Get moving.

We all know physical activity is important for our overall health, but how many of us truly try to get moving as much as possible. For many of us the gym is intimidating. Physical activity is not limited to the gym. It means going for that walk with your family. Walk the dog. Take the stairs. Park at the end of the parking lot or get up and walk around your office building every hour in order to get moving. Your body will feel so good just by getting moving! Our bodies are not meant to be couch potatoes!

Spend some time on yourself and de-stress!

We all have so much stress in our lives. We also spend most of the time we do have on doing stuff for our families like making dinner, playing chauffer, going to sporting events. What we fail to do is to take a little time each day for ourselves.

You are not superman/superwoman! You can’t go doing everything for everyone else and neglecting yourself. Believe me; if you spend a little time on yourself, you will be in a better state to better take care of your family and others. When you are not emotionally satisfied by taking care of yourself, you will not be able to adequately take care of your family.

Volunteer.

On the other side of things, it feels great to help out others. It’s a great way to relieve stress and improve your psychological health. When you are able to volunteer and serve others, you might be surprised with how much you learn about others and yourself. It’s a great way to get that emotional uplifting! Try it!

Make sure to go outside every day.

Now I understand that this is not possible in lots of places in January. However, it’s important for your psychological and even physical self to get that exposure to nature on some level each day. Nature offers a great stress relief and rejuvenation that provides a great boost and motivator to complete and be successful in other areas of your life. Relax and enjoy nature in some way! Hint: in winter, buy a bouquet of flowers from the grocery store and put it on the table and take time to smell the flowers! It feels great doesn’t it?

Detoxify your life.

There is so much going on in our lives and hitting us from all directions such as the pollutants in the environment, toxic chemicals in our cleaning products and our food, and the overall emotional stresses in our lives. How are we supposed to combat it all? Detoxify your life. Research how to detoxify yourself. Whether you decide to detoxify through your diet or by taking more time to emotionally recharge yourself from the toxicity in your life pulling you down, it’s important to detoxify.

By focusing on improving your health in all the different areas of your life, you will feel more empowered and inspired. Imagine how your life will look when you have your health under control and can focus on achieving all those awesome goals you have for yourself. For one-on-one support to improve your health get the help of a health coach!
